Arms Museum is replacing windows

Youngstown

The first-floor windows of the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., are being restored. Studio Arts & Glass of Canton has removed the windows in the front of the building to replace deteriorated wood in the frames, and to fix the leading and glazing on the window panes.

After the windows are put back in place, new ultraviolet light-filtering tempered glass coverings will be installed. The tempered glass that will replace the clouded 32-year-old lexan covers will remain clear so the architectural details of the windows will be visible from the outside, said Bill Lawson, executive director of the museum. Also, visitors will be able to see the lawns and gardens from the inside, which Laswon said was the original intent of Mrs. Arms in designing her home.

The project is being funded by an anonymous donor.

Construction of a new front sign also is under way. Ricottilli Construction of Poland is building an architecturally compatible sign to replace the one that dated back to 1964, when the museum first opened. This project is being funded by grants from the Ward Beecher and Frank and Pearl Gelbman foundations.

Phase one of the window restoration project will be complete in time for the Memories of Christmas Past holiday exhibit, which opens Dec. 3.
