The phrase “Sunday driver” doesn’t come up much anymore, and when it does, it is most often a pejorative reference to someone who is holding up traffic.
There was a day when Sunday drives were exciting family events. Now we have so many better things to do, like watch a football game on TV. Or play a computer game. Or surf the web.
Assuming you’re reading this earlier rather than later in the day, let us be so bold as to suggest that there might be something better to do than any of those things — better, even, than reading your newspaper.
And taking a Sunday drive is exactly that something. Especially today.
At least that’s the word from Casey Burdick, who is identified as the fall color forester for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This weekend, Ohio’s fall foliage is reaching peak and near-peak conditions, especially in our area.
Burdick recommends Ohio’s 75 state parks, 21 state forests and 134 state nature preserves as ideal places to admire nature’s canvass. Pennsylvania has 120 state parks.
But as the photo in yesterday’s Vindicator demonstrated, there are spectacular sights to be seen no farther away than Mill Creek Park.
And if you are reading this much later in the day, don’t despair. Next weekend may not be too late, especially if you head a bit farther south, where the leaves turn a bit later in the season.
