Arrest in robbery try

NEWTON FALLS

Police have apprehended one of two people wanted in an attempted robbery at the Pamida store, 2300 Milton Blvd. on Sept. 26.

Raymond Sugar, 28, of West Middletown Road in Mahoning County, was arrested Friday by the Salem Police Department and is in the Trumbull County jail.

Police are still looking for Ashley R. Perry, 26, of Mock Road, Berlin Center, in the crime. A felony robbery warrant was issued for her last week in Newton Falls Municipal Court.

Police believe Sugar and Perry attempted to take video games from the store, but store personnel confronted them. One of the two suspects reportedly held a can of pepper spray to the face of an employee and threatened to spray him. The employee grabbed the video games, valued at $540, and the suspects fled in a car, police said.

Coalition fundraiser

The 7th Ward Citizens’ Coalition is hosting its annual fundraiser at the Lemon Grove Caf , downtown Youngstown at 5 p.m. Friday. The coalition will provide appetizers from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person. The funds raised will go to neighborhood revitalization projects throughout the ward. Immunization clinic

GIRARD

The well-child immunization clinic is at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Girard Health Department, 100 W. Main St., in the City Building.

A $10 fee is charged per child. Parents are reminded to bring a copy of their child’s immunization record; and a parent or guardian must accompany children under 18. Parents must pre-register the child before the clinic. Call 330-545–6048 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Design workshop

The Warren Weed & Seed Program in collaboration with Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership will offer a Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design workshop 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 at First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Park Ave.

CPTED theories contend that law enforcement, planners and others can improve safety by designing a physical environment that positively influences human behavior. Boarding up vacant structures, improving lighting and cutting shrubs and grass are examples.

The training is open to all Trumbull County residents as well as all housing and health officials. To register, contact the Warren Weed & Seed office at 330-373-6010 by Friday.

Civil War lecture

Youngstown

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society, the Melnick Medical Museum and the Women’s Studies Department at Youngstown State University are pleased to present a free program honoring the anniversary of Ohio’s involvement in the Civil War.

Ohio Women and the Civil War Home Front, a presentation by Dr. Kelly Selby, will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Melnick Medical Museum, 655 Wick Ave.

The presentation demonstrates the importance of Ohio’s women by exploring their wartime activities on the home front, focusing largely on the Soldiers Aid Societies and the Sanitary Fairs in Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Selby is an assistant professor at Walsh University and has done extensive research in the history of 19th-century war and society.
