Poland is second at girls state golf

Poland is in second place after the first day of the girls Division II state golf championship.
The Bulldogs fired a four-player score of 362 at Ohio State’s Gray Course to trail only Dayton Chaminade-Julieene by 10 strokes.
Warren JFK is in fourth place with 370.
Poland was led by senior Maria Mancini, who shot 86. Giana DiBenedetto added a 90, followed by Melinda Hannon (91), Rachel Sines (95) and Christine Bilas (97).
JFK’s Haylee Harford, a freshman, fired a 71 to lead all individual scorers.
Also for the Eagles, Kelsie Teaberry shot 89, Alina Baker 104, Katie Giardinia 106 and Natalie Wolford 110.
Mikayla Baer of Elmore Woodmore was second with a 75.
BOYS DIVISION II
SUNBURY
Thomas Lydic of Champion was in 11th place among the individuals at the boys Division II state golf championship at North Star Golf Resort.
Lydic shot an opening day 83. Clark Engle of Springfield Shawnee leads with a 79 and Matt Miller of Byesville Meadowbrook is second with 80.
Lydic’s teammate, Mitch Weaver, fired an opening-round 88 on Friday, and Brandon Pluchinsky of South Range finished with an 86.
Mooney’s team was in 12th place after the first day with a score of 367.
Springfield Kenton Ridge led the team standings with 342, and Columbus Watterson and Gallia Academy were tied for second at 347.
Mooney was led by Max Pikunas with an 88. Dom Patella added an 89, while Ricky Clark shot 94, Steve Perry fired a 96 and Corey Stefanac finished with 103.
Girls tennis
CANTON
One singles player and three doubles teams remain in contention for state tournament berths after the first day of the Division II girls district tennis championship.
Victoria Ferry of Liberty was the only singles player to win a first-round match. She lost in the second round, and will play today for fifth-place and a berth in the state tournament.
In doubles, Dominique Cicchi and Jamie DiDomenico of Mooney will play Hathaway Brown in a consolation semifinal, and Lakeview’s Jillian Hickey and Tessa Rowlands will play Poland’s Amy Noll and Elise Eckman in another semifinal.
The winners will meet for the fifth place berth.
In singles, Nicolette Arnoto and Kacey Haggerty of Mooney, and Lauren Lee of JFK all lost in the first round.
In doubles, JFK’s Dana Nocera and Mega Guliano were defeated in the first round.
