Program on Ohio women in Civil War

Youngstown

Kelly Selby will give a free program titled “Ohio Women and the Civil War Home Front” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Melnick Medical Museum, 655 Wick Ave.

Parking is available behind the museum and in the Arms Family Museum lot across the street.

Ohio’s political and military importance to the Union victory are widely known, but often less understood is the vital contribution made by the state’s female population.

This presentation demonstrates the importance of Ohio’s women by exploring their wartime activities on the home front, focusing largely on the Soldiers Aid Societies and the Sanitary Fairs in Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Selby is an assistant professor at Walsh University and has done extensive research in the history of 19th-century war and society.
