Boardman boys soccer undefeated in league play


The Boardman High School boys soccer team remained undefeated in Federal League action as the Spartans defeated Canton McKinley 10-3.

Four Spartans scored two goals each to lead Boardman to a 3-0-1 Federal League record on the season. Senior Drew Rober scored twice and also booked two assists for the Spartans. Both of Rober’s goals came off assists from senior Christian Silvestri. Sophomore Luke Marsco also found the net twice, scoring one unassisted goal and another assisted by sophomore Alex Thomas.

Junior Nico DiIanni’s two scores were assisted by sophomores Sam Mathey and Fabio Bassil. Senior Matt Horvatich tallied one solo goal and another assisted by Mathey. Bassil and Mathey each registered goals as well, both coming off assists from Rober.

Junior Anthony Caluatti had two saves in goal for Boardman.

Next, the Boardman High School Boys Soccer Team defeated Ursuline by a score of 12-0 on Sept. 29.

Senior Matt Horvatich paced the Spartans with three goals, while the Thomas boys added three more goals; one from senior Eric Thomas and two from sophomore Alex Thomas. Goals were also netted by seniors Christian Silvestri and Michael Billett, juniors Nico DiIanni and Alan Olson, and sophomores Sam Mathey and Luke Marsco.

Assists on the evening’s effort came from Silvestri (two), Horvatich (two), junior Pete Ryan (two), DiIanni, Mathey, Alex Thomas, senior Drew Rober and sophomore Fabio Bassil.

Junior Anthony Calautti registered two saves as the first half keeper. He was then relieved by freshman Brian Fryda who tallied three saves in the second half. The Spartans are now 6-2-3 on the year.
