A fire destroyed an apartment at the Tandy complex on Woodland and Monette avenues, and around a dozen other apartments had to be evacuated, the fire department said.

The fire started around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after a tenant who was heating cooking oil left it unattended to go help someone with chest pains, the department said.

When the tenant returned, her apartment was engulfed in flames, the department said. The Red Cross is helping her. The damage estimate is $60,000 to $70,000.

There were no injuries.
