NEW MIDDLETOWN

A grant to replace aging waterlines on a portion of Middletown Road has been awarded to the village.

Fiscal Officer Carl Flitcraft Jr. said that the Ohio Public Works Commission has awarded the village a competitive grant to replace waterlines from state Route 170 to an area near Brungard Road. Details of the grant were not available when New Middletown Village Council met Monday but Mayor Harry Kale said the award amount is more than $100,000.

Flitcraft announced that leaf pickup will begin Monday and continue every Monday through Nov. 28.

Police Chief Vince D’Egidio said there will be a drug take-back at the village administration building from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 29. Any unused drugs, even illegal drugs of abuse, can be disposed of with no questions asked. Needles will not be accepted. The event is part of a nationwide effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Council waived the three-reading rule and passed legislation to pay Flitcraft $15 per hour to do paperwork for the Mahoning County Safe Communities grant program. The village administers the grant for the entire county.

Council member Dan Santangelo announced that the Triangle VFW Post in New Springfield has donated handicapped-accessible swings to the village, and they will be installed in the spring.

Council member Virginia Younger said there will be a village Christmas parade at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 12 and a tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. Details will be announced.

Fire Chief Curt Brown announced the annual Halloween Parade will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 29. A party for youth will follow at Springfield Elementary until 3 p.m. Council set Halloween trick-or-treat hours for 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.
