YOUNGSTOWN
New-car sales in the Mahoning Valley jumped 21 percent in September, led by a trio of Chevrolet models, according to statistics released Monday by the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio.
Sales of new cars rose from 1,732 last September to 2,100 and are up nearly 5,000 units through the first nine months of the year, a 31 percent increase.
The Chevrolet Malibu topped the Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze for the first time in three months.
Dealers sold 128 Malibus in September; they sold 126 Cruzes.
The Malibu still leads the Cruze in year-to-date sales, 1,697 to 1,638.
The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (106), Ford F-150 (68) and Chevrolet Equinox (65) trailed the leaders.
Bob and Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep, 4850 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, won the new-sales crown in September, selling 139. It topped Greenwood Chevrolet, 4695 Mahoning Ave., Austintown, which sold 127.
Used-car sales dropped 4.5 percent in September but are still on pace to match 2010’s total of 31,078.
Donnell Ford, 955 Market St., Boardman, sold 97 used cars in September, the most of any dealer in the Mahoning Valley.
Denny’s Auto Sales 1204 South Ave., Youngstown and Greenwood sold 88 and 82, respectively.
The Chevrolet Impala was the most-purchased used car. Dealers sold 118 units.
