BOARDMAN HIGH Hall of Fame inductees
Boardman High will induct 10 members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday at the Canton GlenOak-Boardman football game. Formal inductions will take place on Oct. 16 at The Georgetown. Reservations for the dinner and ceremony may be made with Diana Alvino (330-758-7819). The inductees are:
Joel Fox (1993), Track/Cross country: A four-year letterman, he was All-Steel Valley Conference First Team and All-Suburban League First Team in cross country. He qualified for state three times.In track, he earned three varsity letters, making All-SVC First Team each year. He was the SVC mile champion in 1991 and 1992 and Mahoning mile champ in 1991. His 4x800 and 4x1600 relay teams set school records.
Alyson Vogrin-Norris (1996), basketball: A four-year letter winner and three-year All-SVC honoree, she was All-State honorable mention and second team All-State as a senior. She topped 1,000 points and set records for most free throws (21) and most points in a playoff game (36).
D.J. Durkin (1996), football: A three-year letterman, he capped off his football career on a 10-3 team that won the SVC Championship and made it to the state semifinals. He was named First Team All-SVC and First Team All-NEO that year. He also lettered in basketball as a senior. At Bowling Green, he started at defensive end for four years.
Lori (Anness) Dunn (1996), volleyball: Her three-year career included team championships as well as individual awards and records, which contributed to her being the first volleyball Hall of Fame inductee. As a senior and team captain, she was NEO Division 1 Player of the Year. She also set records for kills, points, and ace serves.
Preston Tims (1996), football: In football, he was All-SVC Second Team as a junior and First Team All-SVC and First Team All-State as a senior, playing on an SVC and Div. 1, Region 3 championship team. He also was NEO Player of the Year and received the Mack Truck Award for the Outstanding Lineman of the Year. In track, he was the SVC champion in the shot put as a junior and senior. He lettered three years in football at Princeton.
Jason Sutton (1990), football: He was First Team All-NEO and All-SVC as a senior and receiving Special Mention All-State. He also was a member of the baseball team that won district titles in his junior and senior years. At the Military Academy at West Point, he lettered in football for three years and was elected Co-Captain his senior year and named Outstanding Defensive Performer.
Jeff Matiscik (1991), baseball: He was a powerful hitter and pitcher as well as a standout offensive tackle on the football team. His senior year, he had 31 RBIs, 11 doubles, three triples and six home runs, earning First Team All-SVC honors. The Spartans played in the Div. 1 State championship game, losing to Hamilton at Thurman Munson Stadium in Canton. In football, he was First Team All-SVC and First Team All-NEO.
Shelley Jonda (1995), golf: As a freshman, she was part of a State Championship teams. She was named to the All-SVC team for four years. She made Second Team All-Ohio and First Team All-Ohio her senior year, when she finished third overall in the State Tournament. After playing at the University of Cincinnati, she went on to the LPGA Futures Tour in 2002.
Ed Lewis, contributor: He taught social studies at BHS from 1970 to 2010, and coached football and field events in boys track.He made significant contributions to the shot put and discus careers of many athletes, including several state champions and contenders.
Jolene (Moschella) Ross (1996), basketball: The youngest of Coach Ron Moschella’s three daughters, she was a four-year starter and earned First Team All-SVC each year, She topped 1,000 points and set the 3-point season and career records. She played on three SVC championship teams and four District champions.
