Rugby hearing delayed for Samoan tweeter

AUCKLAND, New Zealand

The hearing for the Soamoan player who disparaged a Rugby World Cup referee on Twitter has been delayed until Oct. 15.

Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu asked for more time so he could prepare to answer the misconduct charge and attend a government reception for the team. His hearing had been set for this week. He remains suspended from all participation in rugby.

Samoa lost to South Africa 13-5 last Friday. Afterward, Fuimaono-Sapolu described Nigel Owens’ refereeing as “absolutely horrendous” on Twitter.

Klinsmann seeks first U.S. coaching win

MIAMI

Jurgen Klinsmann made his mark in soccer by being one of the most prolific goal scorers the game has ever seen.

The U.S. could use his scoring knack right about now.

Since Klinsmann took over as coach of the U.S. national team this summer, the Americans have one goal in three matches — and no wins yet, either, settling for two losses and a tie.

They get a chance to change all of that in Miami tonight against Honduras, a team that reached the 2010 World Cup and may very well be an opponent for the U.S. on the way through qualifying for the 2014 tournament.

Four-legged A Rod still at bat in New York

NEW YORK

A Rod isn’t faring so well at the racetrack, either.

Yes, there is A Rod (no hyphen) the horse. Unlike A-Rod the Yankee, this colt’s season isn’t over although he sure could use a win.

The 3-year-old, named in honor of Alex Rodriguez, will be entered to run Thursday at Belmont Park in a $20,000 claiming race.

“The owner is a big Yankee fan and named the horse for the team and A-Rod,” says J.P. Campo, who trains A Rod for Peggy Vandervoort-Kumble. “I’ve been a Yankee fan my whole life and like every other one, losing was a big disappointment.”
