CANFIELD

The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown and Mill Creek MetroParks will sponsor a seminar about trees from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at the MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

During the seminar, four tree experts will speak about trees for today’s landscape.

Dr. James Slavicek of the USDA Forest Service will talk about “Restoration of the American Elm in Forested Landscapes of Ohio.”

He will describe the efforts of the Forest Service to restore the tree and generate new cultivars with tolerance/resistance to Dutch Elm Disease through tree breeding and selection of survivor trees.

Chris Carlson of Kent State University Salem will discuss “Trees Native to Ohio and Western Pennsylvania” and how they can be incorporated into the landscape. Because they have adapted to local conditions and have natural defenses to insects and diseases, native trees are especially important.

Bill Hendricks of Klyn Nurseries will discuss “Great Trees for Added Diversity.” He will identify many of the underused trees to consider for improving the diversity of the urban forest.

Arborist Kurtis Magnello’s topic will be “ Five Steps for Training Young Trees.” He will demonstrate proper pruning methods for training branch structure of trees as they develop, leading to a healthier, less problematic tree.

Registration has be extended with a late fee of $50. Cost includes the speakers, all seminar materials, door prizes, continental breakfast and lunch.
