A homemade-wine contest to benefit St. Dominic Church is set for Sunday evening.

The contest will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center on South Avenue. Tickets cost $25 and are available in advance at St. Dominic Church, 77 E. Lucius Ave., Youngstown, and Raymond James financial at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Entertainment will include a performance by country recording artist Sarah Turner and appearances by local media personalities Dan Rivers and Casey Malone.

The Rev. Greg Maturi said 600 people attended last year’s event.

Proceeds will benefit the St. Dominic Church parish center, the priest said.

Construction bids for the center will open later this month, and the expected cost is about $1.2 million, he said.

After the bid openings, Father Maturi will make a final presentation to the Diocese of Youngstown and, if he receives final approval, the project will break ground in the spring.

The main auditorium would be 4,000 square feet, which will accommodate between 300 and 400 people. The parish is only $100,000 away from its $1.2 million fundraising goal, he said.

“It’s a great boon for the neighborhood and the city,” he said.
