St. Thomas, Gilmour move on in golf

Ryan Fowler of JFK and Ryan Nagy of Jackson-Milton each shot 79s at Seven Hills Country Club to earn the top scores for area competitors at the Division III district boys golf tournament on Thursday.

While no team in the Valley advanced to next week’s state tournament, Leetonia shot the lowest with a 450. The Bears were led by Luke Janci’s 83.

Jackson-Milton shot 479 as a team and Columbiana had a team score of 468.

Individually, Springfield’s Mark Noel had a 92, Campbell’s Brian Austalosh had an 80, Mathews’ Aaron Suchanek had an 87 and Crestview’s Robert Logan had a 97.

With team scores of 325 and 337, respectively, Gilmour Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas were the team qualifiers.

JFK’s James LaPolla shot a 76, but was disqualifed for signing an incorrect scorecard.
