Police identify shooting victim

Police used fingerprints to identify a man who is in critical condition after he was shot in his chest, throat and left eye.
Capt. Mark Milstead said the Pittsburgh police fingerprinted the victim and determined Thursday that his name is Darryl Roper Jr., 23, of Akron.
Roper is in critical condition at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was transferred there after the shooting, which occurred Monday near the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Thorn Street on the city’s South Side.
Milstead said the delay in identifying Roper was because he was transferred quickly from St. Elizabeth Health Center to UPMC.
Before the hit on Roper’s fingerprints, police were attempting to identify him using photos of three distinctive tattoos Roper has on his arms.
Roper was released from prison in January, where he was serving time for vandalism and aggravated- robbery convictions, Milstead said.
Police continue to investigate the shooting.
