South Range’s Brandon Pluchinsky won individual medalist honors and Cardinal Mooney finished second in the team standings to earn state tournament berths at Tuesday’s Division II district golf meet at Windmill Lakes. Pluchinsky shot a 74 (36-38) to finish a stroke ahead of Champion’s Thomas Lydic as each earned one of the four individual qualifying spots. Lydic’s teammate, Mitch Weaver, shot 78 to also earn a spot. Mooney’s team of Max Pikunas (78), Ricky Clark (79), Cory Stefanec (81) and Dom Patella (82) shot a 320 — five strokes behind Canton Central Catholic. Poland finished fifth (333) to finish one stroke behind Burton Berkshire for the fourth and final team spot. Also, Poland’s Mark Passarelli shot 78 and was part of three-player playoff for the final two individual spots, but failed to qualify. South Range and West Branch tied for eighth and Hubbard was 14th out of 16 teams.
Late Monday Division I
VIENNA
Boardman’s Jake Fait shot 75 and Canfield’s Dom Carano 77 as each moved on to district competition as individuals after the sectional tournament at Candywood. The top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced. Fait shot a 75 to tie Kent Roosevelt’s James Strange for the top spot; he officially placed second after losing a coin flip. Carano’s 77 was good enough for fourth. Boardman finished an area-best sixth among teams, while Canfield was eighth, Fitch 12th and Howland 15th.
GIRLS GOLF Division II district
CANTON
Poland’s Maria Mancini shot a team-best 78 to help the Bulldogs capture the Division II district title at Tam O’Shanter and advance to the state tournament for the fourth straight year. Warren JFK’s Haylee Harford shot a 71 to earn medalist honors and help the Eagles finish second with 366, while Gates Mills Hawken was third with 368. Champion and Lakeview finished 11th and 12th, respectively. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on a qualifying team advance to state competition. No area individuals qualified.
