YOUNGSTOWN

A 24-year-old Boardman man faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon and felonious assault after a shooting on the city’s South Side.

Police arrested Matthew Barillaire of Wolosyn Circle about 8 p.m. Monday and took him to Mahoning County jail.

According to police reports, officers were called to the 100 block of Hilton Avenue about 7:45 p.m. Monday when they found Barillaire and a 21-year-old Youngstown man who had a gunshot wound in his torso.

Barillaire told police, “He tried to rob me; I had to shoot.” He said the gun was inside of his car, according to reports.

Police said Barillaire told officers he met the Youngstown man two days ago at the Shell gas station on Market Street and that he received a call Monday from the Youngstown man asking for a ride.

When Barillaire picked up the man on South Avenue, the man asked to go to his house on Hilton Avenue, reports state.

The man then demanded Barillaire give him money, and he began fighting with Barillaire. Barillaire told police he pulled out a handgun from beneath his seat and fired one shot, police said.

The Youngstown man denied trying to rob Barillaire and was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was listed in stable condition late Tuesday.
