Parents charged in infant’s death

NEWPORT, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania couple faces involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of their infant son earlier this year.

Investigators say 7-month-old Jordan Kauffman sustained several broken bones before his January 28 death. Police say the boy had a bandage wrapped around his arm and chest to immobilize a broken arm the night he was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Twenty-one-year-old James Allen Kauffman and 20-year-old Jamie Michelle Cassell were arraigned last week and ordered held on $500,000 bail.

An autopsy showed Jordan Kauffman was severely underweight for his age. No cause of death was determined but investigators say asphyxiation could not be ruled out.

Police say James Kauffman and Cassell each accuse the other of abusing the boy. Phone messages left with their public defenders were not immediately returned.
