Funded entirely by grants, the township on Monday unveiled a renovated, larger and more energy-efficient restroom at Center Park.

June Smallwood, the director of parks and recreation, said the old facilities contained only one toilet per men and women’s restroom.

“They were badly outdated,” she said. “There wasn’t any money available to fix those things.”

With several softball and little league players and fans traveling to Liberty for one of the many tournaments at the park, there were long lines of people waiting to use the old facility. The park is located behind the township administration building.

In 2010, Northeastern Ohio Public Energy Co. gave the township $108,000 in energy-efficiency improvement grants, of which $25,000 was used to renovate the Center Park facility.

The labor involved was all volunteer from businesses around the community.

The renovation, which began in fall 2010, added an additional 400 square feet, three urinals to the men’s restroom, two stalls to the men’s and women’s restroom, toilets, sinks, handicap-accessibility and LED lighting.
