Canfield girls win sectional

CORTLAND
The Canfield High girls golf team shot a 356 on Monday to win the Northeast District Division I sectional tournament at Tamer Win.
Also qualifying for the district meet were Geneva (356), Kenston (356) and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (360). The district tournament will be played on Oct. 11 at the Legends of Massillon course.
Howland shot a 406 to finish eighth out of the 14 teams competing. Fitch (422) was 11th, followed by Boardman (445).
Christina Cooper led the Cardinals with an 86. Also for Canfield were Kelly Fleming (87), Michele Whiteleather (89) and Annie McGlone (94). Kayla Cerimele’s 95 won the tiebreaker.
The four individuals from non-qualifying teams to advance are Lakeside’s Krista Johnson (84) and three golfers from Kent: Megan Finley (84), Kelly Nielsen (85) and Kasey Nielsen (87).
Geneva freshman Danielle Nicholson shot a 77 to earn medalist honors.
Howland’s top golfer was Haleight Guerrero (92). Leading Fitch was Rachel Williamson (100). Sydney Metzel shot a 107 for Boardman.
Boys
VIENNA
Boardman’s Jake Fait shot a 75 at Candywood to advance to the boys Div. I district tournament at Pine Hills Golf Course.
Fait had the third-best score for teams that finished out of the top four.
Boardman shot a 226 to finish fifth. Other Spartans were Brad Dofka (78), Bob Diamond (84) and Kyle Basile (88).
Other team scores were not reported.
