Pa. governor to discuss Marcellus Shale industry

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Gov. Tom Corbett will be touring a carpenters training center in Pittsburgh where he’s also expected to discuss his policy approach to the state’s booming natural gas industry.

Corbett will be at the facility at 11 a.m. today.

Corbett has said little about how he would approach the three-year-old Marcellus Shale industry, although he received a report from a hand-picked commission in July that recommended the industry help government pay for the cost to regulate it and fix the damage it causes to the environment.

The panel also suggested ways to guard against drilling pollution and how the state can help the industry find new customers. Corbett is a pro-business Republican who has welcomed the industry as rescuing the state’s economy while it tries to bounce back from the recession.
