Australia, France reach RWC quarterfinals

AUCKLAND, New Zealand

Australia and France paid a price for reaching the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals Saturday, with the Wallabies apparently losing winger Drew Mitchell to another injury and France struggling in a loss to Tonga.

Injury-plagued Australia routed Russia 68-22, but Mitchell pulled up with a left hamstring injury while racing toward what would have been his third try of the match at Nelson.

France, in disarray from injuries and a coach whose experimental selections aren’t providing confidence, fell 19-14 against Tonga in Wellington.

Uncle Mo is back! Wins Kelso by 3 lengths

NEW YORK

Uncle Mo is back in a big way, cruising to victory in the Kelso Handicap at Belmont Park on Saturday.

The 3-year-old colt led from the start, and held off a brief challenge by Jackson Bend for a three-length victory over a muddy track.

Uncle Mo was sidelined nearly 41/2 months with a life-threatening liver disease and missed the Triple Crown races. He returned in August and was beaten by a nose in the King’s Bishop.

This time it was all Uncle Mo, who covered the mile in 1:33.82.

MINNEAPOLIS

Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve noticed at the All-Star break that teams in the league were taking a difference view of her Lynx.
