Saturday’s other big ten games
No. 19 Michigan 58, Minnesota 0
ANN ARBOR, Mich.
Denard Robinson gave his feet a break and put his arm to work. Robinson threw for two scores as part of an efficient passing game and ran for a touchdown on a season-low six carries. The speedy quarterback with a shaky arm was 15 of 19 for 169 yards and didn’t throw an interception for the first time since the opener. “We was clicking,” Robinson said. The rest of the Wolverines (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) were, too, against the overmatched Golden Gophers (1-4, 0-1) in the Legends Division opener for both teams. The Wolverines kept the Little Brown Jug trophy that the teams have played for since 1909. Michigan had its most lopsided win since beating Indiana by the same score in 2000. “They are bigger, stronger and faster than we are right now,” said Minnesota coach Jerry Kill, who was on the sideline just days after leaving the team seeking more treatment for seizures he’s had the past three weeks. Robinson is simply sensational as a runner, but had been lackluster as a passer this season. Entering the game, he completed 49 percent of his passes and his six interceptions surpassed the total he had in September and October last year. Liberty H igh graduate Fitzgerald Toussaint ran for a career-high 108 yards, freshman Thomas Rawls had 73 yards rushing and Michael Shaw ran for 60.
No. 24 Illinois 38, Northwestern 35
CHAMPAIGN, Ill.
Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase scored a 1-yard touchdown with 13 seconds left to lead Illinois to a comeback win. The sophomore QB threw for a career-high 391 yards and three touchdowns for the Illini (5-0, 1-0). All three TD passes went to A.J. Jenkins, who had 12 catches for a school-record 268 yards. Scheelhaase had to engineer two comebacks to pull out the win over the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1). Illinois scored 21 straight points after Northwestern took a 28-10 third-quarter lead.
No. 7 Wisconsin 48, No. 8 Nebraska 17
MADISON, WIS.
Russell Wilson threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns and Montee Ball added 151 yards on 30 carries with four TDs as the Badgers (5-0) rallied from a 14-7 deficit to give Nebraska (4-1) a rude welcome to the Big Ten. The Huskers were playing their first conference game since leaving the Big 12 after last season.
Notre Dame 38, Purdue 3
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.
Tommy Reese completed 24 of 39 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns and Cierre Wood added 192 yards on 19 carries with a TD as the Irish (3-2) overwhelmed in-state rival Purdue (2-2).
