NEW CASTLE, Pa.
A $250,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant awarded this month to the Crisis Shelter of Lawrence County will enhance the shelter’s services to domestic and sexual violence victims and double the capacity of the transitional housing program, according to the shelter’s Executive Director, Dayna Shaw Sear.
The award was announced by U.S. Rep Jason Altmire of McCandless, D-4th. The transitional housing grant provides funds for victims of domestic or dating violence, sexual assault and stalking who are homeless or in need of transitional housing.
The crisis shelter is a non-profit organization which provides direct services to victims of domestic violence as well as education, awareness, training and leadership initiatives to the community.
Recycling event
MERCER, Pa.
PaCleanWays of Butler-Lawrence counties announces a “Hard to Recycle Item Event” set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, at the Jefferson Township Fairgrounds, 7409 Lamor Road.
Included in the event are appliances, batteries, electronics, fluorescent lights and tires.
Paper for confidential destruction, except newspapers, will be accepted.
There is a fee for all items ranging from 10 cents per battery for alkaline, nickel cadmium, and button cells to $25 for a whole computer system and $30 for a big screen console television. Terms are cash only, the day of the event.

Computer classes
WARREN
Basic computer skills classes will be from 9 to 11 a.m. starting Wednesday at the Warren SCOPE Center, 220 W. Market St.
Participants will learn keyboarding and mousing skills, how to send document and photo attachments in emails, and internet search techniques. How to create, store and find document and photo files will also be discussed.

‘Yappy hour’
CANFIELD
“Yappy hour,” a happy hour for people and dogs, will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at MetroParks Farm, behind McMahon Hall.
Refreshments will be available for participants and their dogs. Angels for Animals will be present with dogs available for adoption at a later date.
The cost for an individual and dog is $10 for MetroMutts members and $15 for non-members. MetroMutts is a Mill Creek MetroParks membership program.
