Dominic, DePizzo set for induction in bowling HOF


The Youngstown USBC Women’s Bowling Association’s 35th annual Hall of Fame induction dinner will be today at Lucianno’s Cafe and Banquet Center in Austintown with cocktails at 4 and dinner at 5.

Jo-Ann Dominic and Sandra DePizzo are the 62nd and 63rd individuals to be enshrined.

Dominic is being inducted into the achievement and meritorious service category, while DePizzo has been selected in the Star of Yesteryear category.

Dominic

An association member for 53 years, Jo-Ann’s highest average was 185. Her best high three-game series was 683 and highest single game was 288.

She participated in 49 Youngstown Assn. city tournaments, 10 Ohio Women’s Bowling Assn. state tournaments and two nationals.

In 1959-60, Dominic convinced the physical education instructor at Chaney High School to permit bowling as part of the GAA activities. Her team placed first two consecutive years and Jo-Ann won the all-events award.

In 1968, she started a league composed of 5th- to 6th-graders at Frank Ohl Middle School on Sunday afternoons. In 1973, she started a league of Ashtabula Joint Vocational School faculty members.

She coached juniors for more than 10 years.

From 1992 to 1994, Dominic participated in the Ohio Games in Cleveland and Toledo where she earned medals for high game (288) and high series (683).

In 1999, after 32 years of serving 22,000 students and over 5,000 instructors, Jo-Ann retired and received the PHD award for Positive, Help and Dedication to staff and students. In 2000, she wrote her first book on counseling techniques, which was published in 2003.

Dominic served as association director and vice-president and as the Youngstown 600 Club president.

DePizzo

Sandra, whose highest average was 196, had a high three-game series of 782 and high single of 279.

She bowled numerous 250-plus games and 700 series.

DePizzo bowled in 18 Youngstown Women’s Bowling Assn. city tournaments and in 13 Ohio Women’s Assn. state events.

A 7-year member of the Ladies Professional Bowling Association Tour, she placed 19th in Tempe, Arizona and 23rd in Syracuse.

In 1982-83, Sandra’s team, Bowl-Aholics, won the YWBA city meet’s team actual event with Helen Moore, DeCinda (Shattuck) Taylor, Anne Splain and Peggy DiBattista with a score of 3,061.

In 1983-84, her team, Youngstown’s Finest Five, won the city’s team handicap championship with 3,152 and team actual of 2,981 with teammates Laurie (Tate) Millerleile, Shattuck, Roselyn Bettura and Rose Smith.

In 1985-86, Youngstown’s Finest Five won city team actual with 2,985 with DePizzo, Bettura, Smith, Shattuck and Shirley Gomori.

In 1989, the Finest Five bowled 2,634 to win team actual with Bettura, Shattuck, Maria Bachinger and Donna Lorenzi.

In 1991-92, Sandra and partner DeCinda Shattuck Taylor won the city doubles actual with 1,202 and her team, Mar-Hill/Wedgewood No. 1, won team actual with 2,883 with members Nancy Davidson, Rose Smith, Shattuck and Sherrie Skelton.

In 1995-96, Dominic’s Canfield Colonial Lanes No. 2 won city team actual (3,168) and team handicap (3,247) with bowlers Smith, Shattuck, Melissa Murphy and Ethel Smith.

Sandra was a junior bowling coach at Holiday for three years.
