Youngs-town Fire Chief John O’Neill and members of the city Fire Department are encouraging residents to visit their neighborhood fire stations between 1 and 4 p.m. Oct. 9 in observation of Fire Prevention Day.
The theme for fire prevention week is “Protect Your Family From Fire.” O’Neill said the open house will allow city residents the opportunity to meet firefighters in their neighborhoods as well as obtain information on home safety and fire prevention.
Giant Eagle donates $10K to food project

The Giant Eagle Foundation has awarded Second Harvest Food Bank $10,000 that will be used to support the Feeding America BackPack Programs in Warren and Campbell. The BackPack Program, administered by member food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, is designed to fill the gaps when other food reseources are unavailable, such as on weekends and during extended holidays. “We are grateful to The Giant Eagle Foundation for this very generous gift. Giant Eagle is a wonderful friend to our food bank and to food banks across the state. We receive food daily from Giant Eagle stores, and they partner with us on numerous campaigns including Harvest for Hunger,” said Michael Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank.

All flowers and decorations at Glenview Cemetery must be removed by Oct. 15 or they will be discarded. Fall and winter decorations may be put on the graves beginning Nov. 1.
Newton Falls gets drug drop-off box
NEWTON FALLS
The Newton Falls Police Department received and mounted its new drug drop-off box in the first-floor hallway of City Hall, 19 N. Canal St, just outside of the police department.
Prescription drugs can be dropped in the box 24 hours a day seven days a week with no questions asked, according to the police department.
The department received the box free through a grant from the National Association of Drug Investigators. It’s part of an ongoing effort by the police department to combat the growing drug problem in Newton Falls, Police Chief John Kuivila said.
4-H seeks members in Trumbull County

The week starting Sunday is National 4-H Week, and Trumbull County is inviting area kids to join the Ohio State University Extension Service 4-H program. It is for youth ages 5 and in kindergarten through 19.
4-H members are engaged in hands-on interactive learning.
Volunteers are screened and interviewed, then provide leadership to youth-driven clubs that focus on a variety of topics.
4-H members participate in projects such as shooting sports, veterinary science, robotics, nutrition, leadership, horticulture, animal sciences, photography, money management, health and others. All projects are based on Department of Education objectives and supplement classroom learning.
In Trumbull County, more than 595 4-H members and 175 volunteers are involved in 40 clubs. For more information, call 330-638-6783.
