Ron Borngesser, an Austintown native and Vietnam war veteran, spends many of his mornings at the Austintown Senior Center enjoying activities and games. During his visits, he often met fellow veterans who were unaware of support organizations and benefits available to them.

As historian of American Legion Post 301, Borngesser wanted to use his organization to offer a service for his fellow vets. Austintown Senior Center’s Veteran’s Corner was dedicated at the facility during an Aug. 16 presentation.

“Veterans are really missing out when they don’t take advantage of some of the services offered to us,” explained Borngesser. “In our Veteran’s Corner, we’re offering fellowship, brotherhood and advice for whatever they may need, whether it’s financial, medical, or emotional needs. There will be brochures and information available, and we’ll be offering live support every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.”

American Legion 301 commander Gary Kommel stressed that the Senior Center corner was an open space.

“We welcome any veteran from any war, and even members of other veteran support groups from around the Valley. It’s about providing a service and giving back in any way we can,” Kommel shared.

During the official dedication of the corner, Borngesser shared how the spot came to fruition. Members of the American Legion presented a table honoring soldiers who suffered as prisoners of war or were missing in action that will be a fixture at the senior center.

Members of the American Legion 301 Auxiliary were on hand as support at the event.

“It’s great to give back to the men and women who have already given us so much,” shared Auxiliary member Marie LaCava.
