As fall moves in on Ohio, a local church is still finishing up its popular summer event.

The Canfield Christian Church hosted a free movie night on Sept. 16 at dusk and showed the film “Secretariat.” In the movie, thoroughbred racehorse Secretariat races in the Kentucky Derby for the honor of a Triple Crown. His owner, Penny Chenery, refuses to sell him despite the expenses that need to be paid on her ailing father’s farm. She insists that her beloved horse be allowed to run his race.

Brenda Hernan has organized the church’s movie nights for four years now. One night a month — usually Fridays or Saturdays — she shows a movie at dusk, outside when the weather permits.

“I just thought it would be fun to have a movie outside in the summertime and get chairs and blankets,” she said. “I just thought it would be a good time.”

The church even provides food to those who come, usually hot dogs, popcorn and drinks.

“We get more people in the summer months,” Hernan said, adding that the largest crowd was around 50 people. “But everybody who comes has a good time.”

The next and last movie night of the year is scheduled for Oct. 21 and will begin at dusk.
