AMS Blue volleyball wins, loses
Austintown Middle School Blue seventh and eighth-grade volleyball teams lost to Boardman Center on Sept. 17. The seventh-grade team lost 25-16, 25-22, 25-11 and the eighth-grade team lost 25-22, 26-24, 25-20.
The seventh-grade team lost to Boardman Glenwood 25-15, 25-17, 25-16 and the eighth-grade team lost 25-10, 25-18. AMS Blue then took on Canfield and the seventh grade lost 25-11, 25-5 and the eighth-grade team lost 25-13, 25-19.
AMS Blue’s seventh-grade team defeated Howland 25-16, 25-10, while the eighth-grade team lost to Howland 25-17, 25-19. The seventh-grade team beat Hubbard 25-11, 25-18 and the eighth-grade team lost 25-23, 25-14.
Glow Golf Outing set for Oct. 15
The Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League is sponsoring a Glow Golf Outing on Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m. at Knoll Run Golf Course, 1421 Struthers Coitsville Road. The cost is $25 per player with four person teams. The cost includes nine holes of golf and cart, light meal with a cash bar available, 50/50 raffle, Chinese auction and more. The deadline to register is Saturday.
The outing will benefit the league’s Community Special Needs.

Girls golf team beats Struthers
The Fitch girls golf team beat Struthers 191-207 on Sept. 22. Rachel Williamson led the Falcons with a team-best of 44. Others contributing to Fitch’s victory were Maura Bianco (47), Caitlyn Cominsky (48) and Jamie Rasor (52).
Boys golf loses to Canfield
The Fitch boys golf team lost to Canfield 175-162. Brian Basista led the Falcons with a score of 42. Others scoring for Fitch were Adam Catauro (43), Vince Goleno (43) and Matt Matasy (47).
Volleyball team loses
The Fitch girls high school volleyball team lost to Hubbard 25-22, 25-14, 25-5. Alana Callahan was the leading server with eight points and two aces. The leading attacker against Hubbard was Jai’leei Letlow with seven kills. Tori was the leading setter and the leading defender of the game. Wise had a total of 12 assists, seven serve receptions and 15 digs. Maria Melfe was the leading block against Hubbard with a total of three blocks.
Fitch ties Howland
The Fitch boys soccer remains unbeaten as they tied Howland 2-2 on Sept. 21. Sophomore Nate Bowlen (assisted by Ben Conley) scored the Falcons’ first goal of the game. Scoring the second goal for Fitch was Ken Kilpatrick. Goalie Nick Sheely had thirteen saves overall.
The junior varsity team beat Howland 4-1. Fitch’s junior varsity team is 7-0-1, only allowing five goals in all year.
Girls tennis takes on Boardman
The Fitch girls tennis team lost to Boardman 4-1. The Falcons lost all three singles matches with Angela Murphy (6-0, 6-0), Emily Wirtz (6-1, 6-0) and Emily Fisher (6-0, 6-0). Nicole Wenick and Ashley Hanuschak won their doubles match 6-3, 6-4 while Sarah Kupas and Katie Klepec lost their doubles match 6-2, 6-2.
Volleyballers place second
The Fitch high school volleyball team placed second out of eight teams at the Lakeside Tournament on Sept. 24. The Falcons won their first game against Jefferson 26-24, 25-21. Tori Wise was the leading scorer with 12 points and seven aces. With 30 sets and nine assists was leading setter Jai’Leei Letlow. Wise and Letlow were also the leading attackers. Wise had 16 attacks and five kills, while Letlow had 14 attacks and five kills. Alana Callahan was the leading defender of the game with 18 receive attempts and 10 digs.
In their second match against Saint John and Paul, Fitch won 21-25, 25-23, 25-15. Wise was again the leading scorer with 15 points and six aces. Letlow took the spot of leading setter with 30 sets and 11 assists. Wise was one of the leading attackers with 22 attacks and six kills. The other leading attacker was Megan Cote with 20 attacks and five kills. Defending the Falcons was Alana Callahan (31 receive attempts and seven digs) and Ashley Powell (13 digs). Wise and Sam Koniowsky both had three solo and two assisted blocks.
Fitch lost in the finals against Edgewood 25-10, 25-19. Ashley Powell was the leading scorer with five points and three aces. Letlow had 15 sets, six assists, 18 attacks and four kills. Defending the Falcons was Callahan (15 receive attempts, 11 digs) and Cote (13 receive attempts, seven digs). Maria Melfe had two solo blocks.
AMS Red volleyball results
The Austintown Middle School volleyball seventh and eighth grade teams both lost to Canfield on Sept. 7. The seventh grade lost in three games, 25-23, 8-25, 20-25. The eighth grade team lost 13-25, 25-21, 15-25.
Both seventh and eight grade teams won against Niles on Sept. 12. The seventh grade team defeated Niles in just two games winning 25-16, 25-20. The eighth grade team defeated Niles 25-11, 25-14.
Next, on Sept. 14, AMS seventh and eighth grade teams defeated Hubbard. The seventh grade team won 25-4, 22-25, 25-20. The eighth grade team defeated Hubbard 21-25, 25-22, 25-15.
AMS’ seventh grade team beat Boardman Glenwood (25-10, 25-13) and Boardman Center (27-25, 25-19) . The eighth grade team lost against Boardman Glenwood (16-25, 13-25) and Boardman Center (25-16, 20-25, 15-25).
Both seventh and eighth grade teams lost to Poland on Sept. 19. The seventh grade lost in two games 25-20 and 25-23. The eighth grade lost in three games, 15-25, 24-26, 22-25.
AMS Red’s seventh grade team lost to Howland 20-25, 25-10, 18-25. The eight grade team defeated Howland in two games winning 25-12, 25-16.
Boys golf team falls to Struthers
The Fitch boys golf team lost to Struthers 176-182. Brian Basista had a team-best of 44. Shooting the second highest score for Fitch was Dom Ignazio with a 45. Others scoring for the Falcons were Pat Rovnak (46), Adam Catauro (47) and Kevin Miller (47).

The ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) test is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. Fitch football shuttle services
Austintown Fitch is offering a free shuttle service for all home football games. The service will run from 6 to 10:30 p.m. with pick-up and drop-off at the west lot of Super Kmart at the corner of Raccoon Road and Mahoning Avenue. All fans are urged to take advantage of this free service.
