1864: A Colorado militia kills at least 150 peaceful Cheyenne Indians in the Sand Creek Massacre.

1910: British explorer Robert F. Scott’s ship Terra Nova sets sail from New Zealand, carrying Scott’s expedition on its ultimately futile — as well as fatal — race to reach the South Pole first.

1929: Navy Lt. Cmdr. Richard E. Byrd, pilot Bernt Balchen, radio operator Harold June and photographer Ashley McKinney make the first airplane flight over the South Pole.

1947: The U.N. General Assembly passes a resolution calling for the partitioning of Palestine between Arabs and Jews.

1981: Actress Natalie Wood, 43, drowns in a boating accident off Santa Catalina Island, Calif.

1986: Actor Cary Grant dies in Davenport, Iowa, at age 82.

1991: Actor Ralph Bellamy, 87, dies in Santa Monica, Calif.

1986: Workers at Weatherbee Coats Inc., members of the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union Local 191, decide by voice vote to continue their strike and say they will not return to work unless health and welfare benefits are restored.

Five families remain unable to return to their homes in McDonald following fires sparked by a natural gas surge and fire officials estimate the loss from the Thanksgiving Day incident at $1 million.

1971: Tyrone Clopton, 12, of Brooklyn, formerly of Youngstown and the son of Chief Yeoman Fred Clopton and Mrs. Clopton, is killed when he was crushed between the top of an elevator and the ceiling of the shaft in an apartment building near his home.

Youngstown police surround a house at 2028 South Ave. and recapture a 23-year-old man who walked out of City Jail by using another man’s identity Nov. 15.

1961: By a 4-3 vote, Youngstown City Council blocks a move by lame duck Mayor Frank R. Franko to hire consultants for three projects on the $9 million bond issue before he leaves office.

Fire destroys Axe’s Market at 32 N. Mill St. and several apartments. The loss is estimated at $200,000.

1936: Two young gunmen rob the Isaly dairy store at 2242 Logan Ave. and the Rummel grocery store, 1230 Wick Ave., escaping with a total of $165 and five cartons of cigarettes.
