I-680 car accident kills Campbell man

A Campbell man died when he was thrown from his car during an accident Sunday morning on Interstate 680.

Robert J. Waring, 21, was northbound at 2:35 a.m. when he lost control of his car and drove into the median just north of U.S. Route 224, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are still investigating.

Thiel fraternity plans walk-a-thon for kids

The 42nd annual Phi Theta Phi Fraternity Walk-a-thon for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Free Care Fund is Friday and Saturday.

In the event’s history, Phi Theta Phi of Thiel College has raised more than $1.1 million for the fund, which benefits tri-state area children. This year’s goal is $35,000.

The brothers will leave Greenville at 10 a.m. Friday, walking through Mercer, Grove City, Slippery Rock and Butler, ending in Freeport at Trinity Lutheran Church. The second day will take them through Natrona Heights, Breckenridge, New Kensington, Arnold, Springdale, Cheswick, Harmar Township, Oakmont, Lawrenceville and finally Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The Phis will collect cash donations, but checks (made payable to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh) can be mailed to Phi Theta Phi Alumni Association, PO Box 365, Greenville, PA 16125. The Lawrence County Tourist Promotion Agency has released details of the 2012 season of the singing contest Rocket to the Stars.

The contest offers a grand prize of $10,000 and one year of voice and performance lessons from Rocket to the Stars professional artistic developer and producer James Meny. Auditions will be in March when the contest visits college campuses in Youngstown, Erie, Pittsburgh and Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa.

Rocket to the Stars will have a May 25 semifinal show at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle.

Six contestants will move on to the July 14 finals at the 21st Annual Fireworks Festival in New Castle. That show will include text-message voting to determine the winner.
