Ohio deer hunting begins Monday; fewer expected to be killed

Deer hunting begins Monday in Ohio, but a state official says he expects a leaner harvest this year.

Ohio Natural Resource Department deer project leader Mike Tonkovich said that the archery season this year has seen 11 percent fewer deer killed. He says the archery season is an accurate predictor for how the gun season will go.

The archery season for deer hunting starts before the gun season. The gun season starts Monday.

Tonkovich says there were fewer hunting license sales this year, which means fewer hunters.

Other factors play into the deer harvest as well. Tonkovich says standing corn serves as a hiding spot for deer and only 34 percent of corn picked for grain has been harvested, compared with 94 percent last year.
