Canfield goalie sets state record

Canfield High goaltender Roger Geiser broke the OHSAA career saves record in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Mentor.

Geiser stopped 47 shots and Sean Meditz scored in the second period. Geiser broke the saves record of Cleveland Heights’ Liam Robinson (2,028 from 2006-10).

Avon 1, Canfield 0

Geiser stopped 48 shots for the Cards (1-3). His career saves total is 2,104. Alex Gulik scored the goal for Avon.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

SALEM

Ashley Harrison scored 20 points and made five steals as Crestview defeated Salem, 53-41, in the season opener for both teams.

Chelsea Caudill’s 17 points included three 3-pointers. Morgan Newbauer made six rebounds and Annie Hardenbrook had five.

For the Quakers, Cassie Davidson scored 11 points.

Howland 56, Shaker Heights 40

HOWLAND

Taylor Williams had a 26-point, 12-rebound game to propel the Tigers (1-0).

Howland led 15-7 after eight minutes and took a 28-22 lead into the break.

Erika Nites added 17 points and Olivia Nicholas had eight points and four assists.

UNITED 55, BEAVER LOCAL 25

HANOVERTON

Ruth Prosko finished with 16 points — including the game’s only 3-pointer — to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists and four steals to lead United in the season opener.

Taylor Smith added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles, while Emily Zehentbauer finished with 12 points. Sam Spitler also had seven rebounds for United, which led 34-16 at halftime.
