YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State baseball program recently added four players in the early signing period.

Logan Brown of Leechburg, Pa; Lance Horner of Rittman; Wynston McMartin of New Albany; and Daniel Sweet of Flowood, Miss., will begin at Youngstown State in the 2012-13 academic year.

Horner and McMartin are right-handed pitchers, Brown can pitch or play in the outfield, and Sweet is a switch-hitting outfielder.

“I’m very pleased with what coach Eddie Marko has done as the recruiting coordinator,” Youngstown State coach Rich Pasquale said. “We needed right-handed pitchers, and we got two quality arms with Lance and Wynston.

“We added some power at the right side of the plate with Lance, and David will also add some power to the outfield as a switch hitter,” Pasquale said.

Brown hit .386 with two homers, 15 RBIs and 23 runs scored last year in leading Kiski Area High to its first section title since 2002. He was a WPIAL AAAA first-team all-section pick.

Horner was 7-0 with a 1.35 ERA last season. An honorable mention All-Ohio selection, he struck out 100 batters and walked 28 while allowing 38 hits in 57 innings.

McMartin struck out 47 batters and walked 10 in 46 innings. He had five wins and a 1.27 ERA while earning first-team all-district and all-league accolades.

Sweet posted a .322 batting average, .467 on-base percentage and .454 slugging percentage to go along with 64 RBIs and 38 steals in his career. He led his squad to a runner-up finish at the Mississippi 2A state championship in 2009.
