Ohio kills plan to collect welfare overpayments
COLUMBUS (AP)
Ohio has decided to kill its plan to collect welfare overpayments dating back to as far as 1985.
Job and Family Services department director Michael Colbert said Thursday the plan impacts a “very vulnerable population” that doesn’t need this as public policy right now.
He said the department would go back to its former policy of only collecting debts up to 10 years old.
Ohio had changed that policy in late 2010 to match the federal practice of not placing any time limit on how far back the government can go to collect extra money that was paid accidentally.
Colbert said Ohio would only go after overpayments that were fraudulent instead of overpaid by mistake.

The Eat’n Park in Penn Hills was closed for the holiday when the 15-pound feathered fowl landed in the dining room Thursday afternoon. It did not survive the impact.
Penn Hills police Officer Bernard Sestili tells WTAE-TV that he responded when the building’s alarm went off. He says the turkey flew into the window and was not thrown.
Penn Hills is about 10 miles outside Pittsburgh.

Just months after a quadruple bypass surgery, the 55-year-old Larson ran again in the 10K, finishing in 1 hour and 1 minute. It was his fourth Thanksgiving Day Race.
