The fourth annual Homeless Walk to kick off the Cold Weather Emergency Shelter Program is at 9 a.m. Dec. 1.

The walk begins at the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., and ends at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, 208 W. Front St., where a press conference about the cold-weather program will be at 9:30 a.m.

Domestic violence

Tri-County Family Violence Prevention Coalition Workplace Domestic Violence Training Program is one of four recipients of the Celebrating Solutions Award given by the Mary Byron Project of Louisville, Ky.

Local and national experts help select programs to receive the award that showcase innovations that demonstrate promise in breaking the cycle of domestic violence and serve as models for the nation.

Help Hotline Crisis Center, Inc., fiscal agent for the coalition, will receive a $10,000 cash award at a press conference Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. in the Finnegan Auditorium of St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Among leading local advocates to be recognized at the event are Molly Seals, senior vice president, Human Resources and Learning, Humility of Mary Health Partners; and Eileen Dray- Bardon, director, Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services.

Happy Healthy Holidays starts with Thanksgiving Day tips, including food-safety information, enjoying the holidays without derailing diet plans and printables to keep on hand.

Golden Buckeye

The Golden Buckeye program launched its page on Facebook this week and is featuring a “Golden Buckeye Holiday Shopping Tip of the Day” starting on Thanksgiving Day and running through December. The tips will offer daily advice about comparison shopping and finding discounts, as well as things consumers can do to keep themselves and their money safe, whether they are shopping at the mall, by phone or online.

In addition to holiday shopping tips, subscribers to the Golden Buckeye Program page on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Golden-Buckeye-Program/116523178368930) also will receive periodic notifications of new businesses that have joined the program and existing merchants that have reaffirmed their commitment to Golden Buckeye cardholders through a weekly business spotlight. Followers of the page also will receive regular updates for cardholders as well as participating businesses and businesses who are considering participation in the program, and information about Ohio Department of Aging services and resources for seniors and businesses.

More than 2 million Ohioans are eligible for the Golden Buckeye card, honored at 20,000 businesses statewide. Golden Buckeye cardholders have saved an estimated $2 billion since the program’s launch in 1976. All Ohioans age 60 or older, as well as adults age 18-59 who have disabilities as defined by Social Security, are eligible for a free Golden Buckeye card.
