WARREN

Enzo Cantalamessa says his appointment as director of public service and safety will “hopefully prove to be an asset” for the city.

Cantalamessa, 38, was appointed to the position Tuesday by the man who will become his predecessor, Mayor-elect Doug Franklin, who has been safety and service director since 2003.

Cantalamessa has been legal counsel for the Trumbull County Engineer since January 2009.

The mayor-elect said he “seriously considered three candidates” before deciding on Cantalamessa.

“He brings a new flavor to the job with his private-sector managerial experience and his legal background [since] he is the first safety-service director who is an attorney,” Franklin said.

Cantalamessa has managed his family-owned Enzo’s Restaurant, which has been in business in Warren for 40 years. He also said his experience in analyzing contracts should be an asset for the city but declined to say what impact that would have on future negotiations with the city’s safety forces.

Union support for the appointment came from Gary Steinbeck, sub- district director of the United Steelworkers, who called it an “excellent choice.”

“I hope to help achieve your vision,” Cantalamessa told Franklin. “We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”

Cantalamessa, who is married and the father of three, will earn a yearly salary of nearly $83,000. Franklin said the salary has been frozen for the past three years.
