SC protesters arrested trying to camp in park

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Several Occupy Charleston protesters have been arrested after trying to spend the night in a downtown park.

Charleston police arrested more than half a dozen people early this morning in Marion Square. College of Charleston student Josh Richmond told the Post and Courier of Charleston that police formed a “body wall” and arrested anyone still in the park after 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Mayor Joe Riley told protesters Monday they were not allowed to stay in the park after 11 p.m. But after police found more than two dozen protesters there with sleeping bags, the group was allowed to stay in the park that night.

Protesters who tried to spend the night Tuesday were arrested.

Those arrested were awaiting a bond hearing today.
