Man fatally shoots self during siege

CLEARFIELD, Pa. (AP) — State police say a central Pennsylvania man fatally shot himself during a standoff with police.

Troopers from the Clearfield barracks say the man identified only as Scott Demko was wounded late Sunday after holding troopers at bay for several hours at his home.

It was not immediately clear where Demko was shot, but a news release Monday says Demko died at Clearfield Area Hospital after reportedly shooting himself about 9:30 p.m.

The Altoona Mirror reports the standoff began about 4 p.m. Sunday when police went to arrest Demko on burglary-related charges. A state police Special Emergency Response Team and officers from Clearfield borough and St. Lawrence township were also called in to assist.

A crime supervisor tells The Associated Press police have determined Demko shot himself, but says other details won’t be released until later today.
