Gas leak forces evacuation of students at Austintown parochial school

Austintown

Students at St. Joseph and Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Austintown returned to class just before 11:30 a.m. after being evacuated for a gas leak.

Fire Chief Andy Frost, Jr. said the gas company red-tagged a couple of boilers that were leaking gas before students were free to enter the school again. The students were moved to the church just before 10:30 a.m. when an odor of gas was detected.

The school has one boiler still operating and repairs have been scheduled to the other boilers, he said.

The building is free and clear of gas, Frost said.

The fire department will go back to the school in the afternoon to make sure everything is operating properly.
