The Grove City College men’s basketball team earned a victory in the second day of action at Geneva College’s “Coaches vs. Cancer” Tournament. Grove City (2-1) led wire-to-wire but had to hold off a late UPG charge to secure the victory.
Mt. Union 63, Geneva 47
BEAVER FALLS, PA.
Mount Union earned a win over Geneva (Pa.) in their second game at the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament. The win puts the Purple Raiders (2-1) over .500 for the first time since beginning the 2009-10 season 5-3. Freshman Stevie Griffin and junior Matt Kiger combined for 24 points off the bench in the opening 20 minutes as the Raiders raced out to a 36-21 halftime lead.
Thiel 75, Otterbein 71
NEW WILMINGTON, PA.
Thiel held off a late comeback attempt by Otterbein to preserve a wire-to-wire victory on the second day of Westminster College’s Buzz Classic. Thiel (1-1) was paced offensively by Devon Adams and Blair Rozenblad (Kennedy Catholic). Adams scored 18 points and dished out eight assists while Rozenblad added 16 points and six rebounds.
Hiram 84, Notre Dame College 73
HIRAM
Senior guard Andrew Wiegand scored a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds to help lead the Hiram past Notre Dame College. Hiram jumped out early beginning the game with a 9-2 scoring run that ended in a dunk by senior guard Jamaal Watkins at the 15:45 minute mark. Notre Dame came back to even the score at 19-19 and then outscored Hiram, 11-6, to record its largest lead of the period of five points, 30-25, with 6:50 left before halftime.

Mt. Union 74, Carnegie Mellon 54
PITTSBURGH, PA.
Senior guard Kori Wiedt had 23 points and five rebounds to lead No. 13 Mount Union to a win at Carnegie Mellon in the final game of the DoubleTree Classic. Wiedt, who was named tournament MVP, hit five of the Purple Raiders 10 three-pointers for the game as junior guard Rosa LaMattina, also selected to the all-tournament team, hit four three’s as she had 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. Carnegie Mellon (1-1) had an 11-8 lead with 13:37 left in the first half before Mount Union went on a 16-3 run to go up 24-14.
Grove City 56, North Carolina Wesleyan 47
FROSTBURG, MD.
Grove City College dropped a 56-47 decision to North Carolina Wesleyan in the championship game of Frostburg State’s Jim Crawley Tournament. Grove City jumped out to an 8-1 lead and led 28-24 at halftime. However, North Carolina Wesleyan (2-1) surged ahead in the second half by holding the Wolverines without a field goal for over 10 minutes in the second half.
Hiram 69, Bethany 54
ERIE, PA.
The Hiram College women’s basketball team recorded its first win of the season with a victory against Bethany (W.Va.) College in the consolation game of the Penn State-Behrend Tournament. The early minutes of the first half was heavily contested by both teams with neither team leading by more than five points. Late in the period with the score tied at 20-20, Hiram outscored Bethany, 17-4, in the final 7:16 to take control of the game, including a three-pointer by senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference guard Kelsey Durichko.
Kenyon 82, Thiel 62
WILMINGTON
Day two of the Wilmington/Hampton Inn & Suites / Damon’s Grill Tip-Off Tournament was no better than day one for Thiel. A setback to Kenyon College kept the squad winless for the young season. The Tomcats (0-3) shot just 35.9 percent (23-64) from the field, but fared better at the free throw line, by shooting 68 percent (13-19). Kelly Barzak (Howland) paced the Tomcats with 12 points, eight rebounds and four blocks while teammates Rianne Thorton and Kelly Muffley each added 10 points.
