Submit details on holiday services

The Vindicator will run a listing of area services that are open to the public in observance of Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24, and Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25. The list will be published Dec. 17.

The deadline to submit information is 5 p.m. Dec. 14. Information should include the denomination and name of the church, address, city or suburb, time of Christmas Eve or Christmas Day services, your name, and a phone number for verification.

Information also may be submitted on services for New Year’s Eve, Saturday, Dec. 31, and New Year’s Day, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012. A list of these services will be published Dec. 24.

Advent service

St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., will present its annual Advent Service of Lessons and Carols at 7 p.m. Nov. 27.

The program will feature the Cathedral Choir directed by Dr. Daniel Laginya and organist Mary Ann Bilas-Bush.

The service is free and open to the public.

Gospel hymn sing

A Gospel hymn sing-along is planned today at New Life Christian Fellowship, 2088 Tibbetts Wick Road. Fellowship will begin at 6:30 p.m and the music at 7.

First Friday Club

John Allen, senior Vatican correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter, will be the featured speaker for the First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown program Dec. 1. The luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Antone’s Banquet Centre on Market Street. The cost is $15. Church anniversary

The Alpha & Omega First Baptist Church, 3120 Winton Ave., will celebrate its 96th anniversary with a special worship service at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The church was organized June 25, 1915, under the leadership of the Rev. Lewis Canady, now deceased. The first church was a house on Taft Avenue, now Nelson Avenue. The original six charter members were Rev. Canady, the Rev. Walter Jennings, Margaret Jennings, Bertha Yates, George Phillips and J. A. Jennings.

On Sept. 18, Pastor Raymond Mason was installed.

The Rev. Gary E. Rozier, associate pastor, will speak at the service. After worship, an anniversary dinner will be in fellowship hall. For information, call the church office at 330-743-5986.

Mass for Hospice

A Mass of thanksgiving and celebration is planned Nov. 27 at St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St., for Hospice of the Valley, which is in its 32nd year. Hospice House, the in-patient Hospice Center, is celebrating five years of service. Bishop George V. Murry will preside over Mass at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow. Hospice of the Valley staff, volunteers and board of trustees will participate.

Learning session

Subdeacon George Mansour leads the talks on church history, ancient beliefs and other topics at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at St. Mark’s Antiochian Church, 3560 Logan Way.

Choir anniversary

New Generation Choir of Phillips Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, 1407 Victor Ave., will mark its anniversary during a program at 4 p.m. Nov. 27.

The choir invites young adult choirs, soloists, praise dancers and mimes from area churches to participate.

Christmas concert

The Youngstown Area Community Concert Band, directed by Joseph Pellegrini, will present a Christmas concert on Nov. 26 at St. Luke Catholic Church, 5235 South Ave. The concert will follow the 4:30 p.m. Mass.

Special Mass

A special Mass at 10 a.m. Sunday at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., will feature “Guys without Ties“ directed by Dale Janus. The presentation is part of the church’s centennial celebration.

After Mass, the parish will host a chili cook-off at 11:30 a.m. in the social hall. Those attending can sample several chili recipes and vote for the favorite chili. Beverages, salad and desserts will be provided. Tickets are $5 for adults, $2 for children age 10 and younger and $10 for a family. A Chinese auction will also be available.

Priest is on the air

The Rev. Andrew Gromm, pastor of St. Michael Orthodox Church, 127 Steel St., teaches the Gospel and church history from the ancient Eastern Christian perspective. “On Earth As In Heaven” is the name of the radio show airing at noon Saturdays on WSOM AM 600.

A Bible study is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at St. Michael with Father Gromm presenting the early Christian interpretation of Scripture.

LightWorks Series

The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, will offer a prayer-based retreat series called LightWorks from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday through Dec. 11

Eileen Novotny, the center’s spiritual director, will lead the group in an introduction to Ignatian spirituality and the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, which have been employed for more than 400 years.

Participants each commit to attend all meetings, pray at least 15 to 30 minutes daily according to suggestions, reflect and take notes on what happened between them and God and be willing to share in small and large group.

The diocesan Infant Jesus of Prague Guild plans its Christmas party on Dec. 1 at St. John the Baptist Church, 159 Reed Ave. Reservations are due by Nov. 26; the cost is $15.

The rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. and the Mass at 10.
