East High School’s Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps recently completed a 206-hour community service project at the school, constructing more than 2,400 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

Operation Christmas Child is a nonprofit organization that collects and delivers shoeboxes with presents, school supplies and more, for children around the world, who otherwise, may not receive a present.

Shoeboxes are shipped to some of the poorest neighborhoods worldwide.

War-torn countries and areas that have been devastated by severe weather are normally targeted for delivery of the boxes.

The students learned that it is better to give to those that are far worse off than us, than only think of themselves.

Once the shoe boxes were constructed, the students transported them to a local church, the New Life Baptist Church in New Wilmington, Pa., where they will be filled with many items that have been donated by the surrounding communities.

Once filled, the boxes will be loaded onto a truck and transported to a receiving and distributing center in Boone, N.C.

From there, they will be flown to other countries and distributed to needy children.
