Although both Disney World and Disneyland are long and expensive plane rides away, it didn’t stop principal Mike Masucci from bringing the magic of Disney to the families of Union Elementary.

On Oct. 20, parents and Union students were invited to Family Disney Night to share fun, learning and quality time together.

“We have some very fun stations here tonight, but I’m also happy that every stop provides a learning experience that meets our academic standards for every grade,” Masucci said during the event.

In the school’s auditorium, the YSU Theater Department hosted “Walt’s Workshop,” where students were asked to imagine a character and their story based on costumes brought by the YSU volunteers.

Another station asked students to create their own “Goofy” story by filling in blanks and personalizing a provided tale.

Ellen Harvischak, of Clarencedale Cakes in Boardman, also visited the school to teach families some cupcake-decorating secrets. Union girls and boys were shown how to pipe icing onto a cupcake and decorate with details and edible glitter.

Harvischak used her time with the students to talk about her business and teach some simple economic theories about goods and services.

The last Disney night station had the students embrace art by finger painting ceramic tiles featuring their favorite Disney character. The tiles were fired in the kiln to seal the colorful paint. The finished tiles provided a momento of the night.

If the stations weren’t enough, families were also eligible to win exciting prizes, including two Clarencedale cakes and tickets to see Phineas and Ferb at the Covelli Center.

Union student Sarah Forsyth was the winner of a cake at the event, and was prepared to share the wealth.

“I think it will be really nice to share the cake with my classmates tomorrow,” Forsyth shared.
