The students of Dobbins Elementary celebrated Veteran’s Day in the month of November with lessons on the history of the holiday and ways to show gratitude to service men and women.

Before the holiday, students recognized their heroes with a Wall of Honor outside the Dobbins library. Paper stars listed the names of relatives or friends of the Dobbins family who have served in the military, offering students a chance to see how service has touched the lives of their peers.

Kindergarten, first, and third-grade students at Dobbins also showed their gratitude for veterans by creating Christmas cards that they will be sending to the Youngstown VA Clinic. The cards share wishes for happy holidays and simple thank-you’s from the students.

“I think it’s important to give our students a real-life chance to thank a veteran that they may not know, but has made great sacrifices for them nonetheless,” said principal Cheryl Borovitcky of the project.

To officially honor veterans on Nov. 11, Dobbins third-graders performed a reader’s theater, sharing useful information on the history of Veteran’s Day and American symbols like the bald eagle, flag, Uncle Sam, Liberty Bell, and the Statue of Liberty.
