Seventh- and eighth-grade students at Canfield Village Middle School took the reins on Nov. 11, celebrating Veteran’s Day with an assembly they organized themselves.

Students and their family members were welcomed into the middle school’s auditorium and local veterans were seated at a place of honor. One side of the auditorium became a wall of heroes, where students honored veterans that have touched their lives with written messages of gratitude.

Seventh-grader Maddie Keyse honored family friend Mick Brooks, who is on active duty in the Army.

“He is my hero because he chose to leave his normal life and help our country. I am proud and I miss him a lot,” Keyse wrote.

Guests read stories of local heroes, but the event truly began when middle school students presented the flags of the United States and Ohio, and performed the Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem.

The student organizers shared many speeches, highlighting the endless freedoms we enjoy because of the sacrifices of veterans. Band members, as well as the middle school choir, performed patriotic songs during the program.

The students also invited a local veteran to speak at the program. Lt. Lance Morrison served nearly six years in the Navy as a member of the JAG Corps, providing legal services for soldiers.

Morrison was asked before the event to consider what being a veteran means to him.

“In the navy, I found that the spirit of people that serve is truly one of a kind. I am honored and proud to be considered part of something bigger than us, protecting our freedoms and the freedoms of those around the world,” Morrison shared.
