Hockey team defeated by Canton/Akron

The Canfield Hockey developmental team took a 2-1 lead part way through the second period on a goal from Dan Drotleff, but could not hold on. They were defeated 5-2 by Canton/Akron, in Cleveland Suburban Hockey League action.

Logan Falkingham got the Cardinals on the board assisted by from Tony Cole. Sam Hepola and Seth Opladen also picked up assists for Canfield (0-1). Pat Byrne stopped 31 shots in the net for Canfield.

Student recognized for golf achievement

Caitlin Butler, a freshmen at Cardinal Mooney High School, has been named a member of the First Team Division II Northeastern Ohio Golf Coaches Association all-star team. Butler was a district qualifier and took honors for the low individual qualifying score (84) at the sectional tournament.

She was named to a first team berth by the Steel Valley Conference Golf Coaches Association. She is the daughter of Sean and Stacie Butler.

Pirates winter caravan in Youngstown Dec. 14

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Winter Caravan will visit Youngstown on Dec. 14 as part of scheduled visits to 16 different communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.

During the three days of Caravan visits, current and former Pirates players, coaches and representatives will meet with fans and the media.

Those expected are manager Clint Hurdle, players Andrew McCutchen, Joel Hanrahan, Kevin Correia, Jose Tabata, Jeff Karstens, James McDonald, Daniel McCutchen, Alex Presley, Brad Lincoln and Michael McKenry and coaches Jeff Banister, Nick Leyva, Luis Silverio and Ray Searage.

Penguin baseball camp

The Youngstown State baseball staff will host a camp for boys and girls aged 6-13 on Dec. 29-30 at the new Watson and Tressel Training Site on YSU’s campus.

The camp will go from 9 a.m. to noon on both days.

All aspects and fundamentals of baseball will be taught, including hitting, fielding, base-running and the mental part of the game.

Baltimore Orioles Coordinator of Instruction Brian Graham will be a featured speaker.

Grenga honored at Mount Union

Mount Union senior Anthony Grenga (Canfield) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District VII men’s soccer first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Grenga has a 3.91 grade point average as a computer science major.

On the field, Grenga captained a team that reached the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time in program team. He also scored one goal in 16 games.
