Austintown Middle School’s sixth-graders saluted the service of local veterans on Nov. 10.

The event began with a moment of silence for fallen soldiers. Sixth-grade principal David Mullane shared the history of Veteran’s Day, explaining that the holiday is celebrated on Nov. 11 because World War I ceased on Nov. 11, eleven minutes past the 11th hour.

A video saluting veterans was shown during the event.

“Do you know who I am?” the video sounded. “I am your mother, father, sibling, husband and wife. I miss you. I need you to support me. You are what I am fighting for.”

The sixth-grade choir performed under the direction of Craig Carson, singing “Land That We Love,” “Sing a Song for Peace,” and “God Bless America.” Kenneth Alexander led the sixth-grade band in an Armed Forces Medley, where members of each branch were asked to stand, as well as performing “Independentia March.”

“When you see a vet, thank them for everything they’ve done for you and for this country,” Mullane shared.

The seventh- and eighth-grade students also honored local veterans in their own choir and band performances on the morning of Nov. 11.
