The officers and council of the Boardman High School Alumni Association have selected the recipients of the second annual Boardman High School Distinguished Alumni awards.

Nominations were received and approved by Boardman Alumni Council and scored by current BHS senior class officers.

The purpose of the Boardman High School Distinguished Alumni Award is to recognize outstanding alumni of Boardman High School who have maintained a high standard of excellence and made a significant contribution in their fields of endeavor.

These individuals must best exemplify the ideals and spirit of Boardman High School and should serve as role models for current and future Boardman High School students.

The 2011 inductees are:

Dr. James. T.E. Chengelis, Class of 1973

Chengelis received both his B.S. and B.A. degree from Youngstown State University. He then continued for his master’s and doctorate at the University of Toledo. He has spent most of his professional career in Massachusetts and is currently Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. He also provides psychiatric consultation, liaison and emergency services at Boston University Medical Center.

He is a true philanthropist, generously supporting the Boardman schools and the Boardman Local Schools Foundation. He has also established several scholarship endowment funds at Boardman High, Youngstown State and University of Toledo.

Ron Scott, Class of 1957

Ron Scott was very involved in sports at Boardman. He went on to earn his BS and master’s in Education. Scott coached Special Olympics for the Leonard Kirtz School for those with developmental delays, as well as, adult Olympians from the Bev Road workshop.

As an educator, Scott professed a philosophy that all children could achieve to their fullest potential. Scott was an avid supporter of track and cross country. Upon his passing in June 2009, his family allowed contributions in his memory to go toward the purchase of a record board celebrating the successes of Boardman teams. This record board was dedicated on March 24.

A copy of the honorees’ award plaques will be placed on the new Alumni wall outside the Boardman High School office. Applications for the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award are now available at www.boardmanalumni.org or email boardmanalumni@gmail.com to request an application.
