Center receives accreditation

Ankle & Foot Care Centers, a podiatric medical practice, received a three-year accreditation for its vascular disease diagnostic laboratory here from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories .

Ankle & Foot Care Centers has 16 physicians and surgeons serving patients at 19 local offices located in Alliance, Austintown, Boardman, Campbell, Champion, Columbiana, East Liverpool, East Palestine, Greenville, Pa., Howland, Lake Milton, Liberty, Niles, Poland, Salem, Struthers, Warren and Youngstown.

Long-term care class

The “ABC’s of Long Term Care,” an education session that provides basic information about long term care is offered by the Western Reserve Association of Health Underwriters Nov. 30 at Bruno’s Restaurant, 1984 Boardman-Poland Road.

Registration begins at 11:20 a.m. followed by lunch, a brief WRAHU business meeting, and the program at noon. Admission is free for members. The cost for non-members is $25 and includes lunch and continuing education credit. The program is approved for two hours of continuing education credit. Reservations can be made by calling 330-394-8901 byWednesday.

The speaker is Mary T. Lavelle of J.L. Thomas & Company. Topics include the definition of long-term care, where it is provided, why it is a crisis in the nation, and ways in which it is paid for.

Area residents to be honored in Columbus

Felicia M. Alexander of Youngstown and Vincent D’Egidio of New Middletown are among 18 recent graduates of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Association of Ohio’s Advocacy Fellows 2011 Class. The Advocacy Fellows will be honored at an invitation-only dinner coinciding with the Ohio Prevention & Education Conference in Columbus.

The Fellows participated in a training program that began in February, 2011 and ended in early November. The program included six sessions of training, relationship building with elected officials, and development of a final project focused on advocating a specific issue related to alcohol, tobacco and other drug-abuse prevention.

Final projects include a range of initiatives, from arranging a radio program on prevention issues to advocating for a change in Ohio law to increase the accountability of adults who allow those under 21 to consume alcohol in their home.

Seniors fitness program sign-up

United Healthcare will help educate seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries about the SilverSneakers Fitness Program and the benefits of staying healthy and active at the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk at Southern Park Mall Saturday.

Seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries can support the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital by participating in the family-friendly 5K walk. Registration and check-in will begin at 7 a.m., and the walk will begin at 8 a.m. in the mall food court.

Seniors and other beneficiaries can learn about Medicare during the Annual Election Period, which ends Dec. 7, through a variety of informational materials created as part of UnitedHealthcare’s Medicare Made Clear campaign.

Free pedometers and shoe wallets will be available, and SilverSneakers representatives will be on hand at UnitedHealthcare’s booth to provide information about the fitness program through informal presentations and exercise demonstrations.
